Chronic kidney disease, also known as chronic renal disease or CKD, is a condition characterized by a gradual loss of kidney function over time.






What are the Symptoms of Kidney Disease?

Most people may not have any severe symptoms until their kidney disease is advanced. However, you may notice that you:

  • feel more tired and have less energy

  • have trouble concentrating

  • have a poor appetite

  • have trouble sleeping

  • have muscle cramping at night

  • have swollen feet and ankles

  • have puffiness around your eyes, especially in the morning

  • have dry, itchy skin

  • need to urinate more often, especially at night



What are the Causes of Chronic Kidney Disease?

Diabetes and high blood pressure are the most common causes of kidney disease. Your health care provider may do tests to find out why you have kidney disease. The cause of your kidney disease may affect the type of treatment you receive.






When Should You Get Tested for Kidney Disease?


Get checked for kidney disease if you have

  • Diabetes

  • High blood pressure

  • Heart disease

  • Family history of kidney failure


How is Kidney Disease Managed?


Some methods for managing Kidney Disease include:

  • Control your blood pressure

  • If you have diabetes, meet your blood glucose goal

  • Work with your doctors to monitor your kidney health

  • Take medications as prescribed

  • Work with a dietitian to develop a meal plan

  • Be physically active daily

  • Aim for a healthy weight

  • Get enough sleep

  • Stop smoking

  • Find healthy coping mechanisms for stress and depression
